January's Jazz Lounge celebrates women in Jazz with a line up featuring two members of the famous Ivy Benson All Girls Band and some of our favourite female jazz musicians here in Cornwall.
WHO WAS IVY BENSON?:
Ivy began her musical career at the age of 8 playing in working men's clubs in West Yorkshire. She moved to London in the late 1930s and formed her own band which eventually became the BBC's resident dance band in 1943. Ivy's all girl band rose to fame in the 1940s, headlining variety theatres and topping the bill at the London Palladium for six months in 1944 and touring internationally.
Ivy lead the band until 1982 and was as famous in her day as Glenn Miller and Dame Vera Lynn, yet sadly her name has not lived on in public memory. Ivy is no longer with us but two of her former band members live in Cornwall. They join us to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Ivy and tell some of their fabulous stories.
CLAUDIA (BASS)
Claudia Lang-Colmer played double bass in the Ivy Benson band from 1954 and is still an in demand player in Cornwall today despite being in her 80s.
CAROL (SAX)
Carol Gasser joined the Ivy Benson All Girls Band while in her teens in 1966 and toured with them until 1971 performing on both tenor and lead alto saxes. Later she moved to Plymouth with her husband, where she became a great favourite with the local jazz fans. Eventually they moved to Cornwall where she still leads and plays with a number of bands.
SARAH (SAX)
Sarah Wearne McDonagh has wowed the Old Bakery Jazz Lounge with her wonderful sax and flute playing many times now, both as part of the Simon Latarche Quartet and the Old Bakery Little Big Band. What's less well known by Bakery fans is that she is also a member of the wonderful Saxy Maids, Cornwall's own all girl jazz band!.
SYLVIA (VOCALS)
We are really excited to have Sylvia McEwen back with us again after her last Jazz Lounge (a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday) created such a stir. Her smooth, soaring vocals are going to be a perfect accompaniment to the night's entertainment..
The night's line up will be completed by Simon Latarche on Piano, Keith Marshall on Drums and a few other special guests.
